Book recommendation

The book I would like to recommend is the See you in the Cosmos, by Jack Cheng. It is about a boy who loves space and makes recordings of what’s going on in the universe to send messages randomly out into space, to hopefully have something or someone respond. While he goes on an astronomy camp he gets a message on ancestry.com about his dad who left him when he was younger. When the camp ends he goes on an adventure to find his dad with his friends. What he finds out changes his life forever and when he comes back home the worst of possibilities happens in the click of his fingers.

Camp Toonallook!

My class recently went to school camp near Gippsland. As we arrived we had lunch and went into a game. The target was to find the letters to which place they were at. Me and my friend Oscar got 11. We came 3rd place in our class. We learnt a ball game. It was called king ball. It was basically a version of 4 square but a bit different. There were four tanks and they were your squares. Your aim was to get to king. The ball could only bounce one before you had to hit it. But if you hit it up to yourself you could hit it two more times and take two more bounces. At night before we went to bed we played a game. It was called the shoe game. It was really fun. What you had to do was sit on a cushion and throw a shoe to hit a drink bottle. It had many made up rules which made it more fun. Our name was jazz’s jellybeans. Me and some of the other boys wanted it to be my name is Gus. There is a long story behind that.

On the second day we went to see the water police. They are like a water ambulance so if you get hurt or your boat is on fire they will help you. We were with them for two hours but then we went on a bike ride in the morning. At this point I was getting eating alive by the mosquitos. We rode around our campsite and around some of the lake. Then we had morning tea. Our campsite cook made amazing scones. Then we went kayaking. When we went kayaking we found lots of jellyfish. We rode around the lake then played in the water. We tried to get around 5 or 6 people on a two person kayak. That didn’t work well since we mostly capsized very time we tried. When we got back we packed up our stuff then we walked a kilometre on two The our camping area. We set up our tents then ate deli our hamburgers. Then we played a game. It was you picked a Disney character then you had to guess other peoples. If someone got yours you would join there team. Me and my partner got out early but it was fun to watch everybody else get guessed. At night we went to where we saw the water police and played and watched the sun go down.

When we got back we brushed our teeth went to the bathroom then went to bed. When we woke up we had toasted sandwiches for breakfast. They were so good. Then we packed up put our things back on the trailer and went to Raymond island. My group had bike riding first we rode around the streets then we went looking at all the koalas. My group found around 30 koalas it was pretty cool. Then we went fishing for 3 hours! Now let’s say it now and only now. We didn’t find anything! That wasn’t the best thing we did but we were trying to catch jellyfish which didn’t really work but I nearly caught one but it dropped. Then when we got back which was pretty late in the afternoon so we played king ball then went to dinner. We played a bit more then josh our leader read us a story.

Now our story nearly comes to an end but not without when woke up at 5:30 to watch the sunrise and we had the Toonallook  challenge. The year 11s made a course for us to beat. We lost to the afterburners who are the other team. Then we had lunch and head home. I loved Toonalook so much see you in May next year!

Book award Judging

In library we have been doing answers and reading books on book week. Our books were Make Believe, Waves, Sorry Day, Bouncing Back, The Happiness Box and our birds. Personally my favourite book was the happiness box because of how it told you that people in the army cared  about children and wanted to make them happy. Grades 4-6 participated in this. Year 4 to 6 favourite book was Make Believe. Which was a book about and artist and his sketches/drawings. But the best book was Sorry Day which was about the aboriginal stolen generation.

For Make Believe I thought the information was done well and was very clear and easy to understand. The pictures and drawings were unbelievable and done perfectly. For  the book Waves it wasn’t very descriptive and the layout could of definitely improved a lot. For Sorry day I would of liked a double spread page for drawings.  The book Bouncing Back I didn’t like at all. The layout was great but the visuals and information were not good at all. The Happiness Box was great especially the visuals. Just to see them made me feel happy. For our birds I loved how the girl did them by her self and put them in her language.

My thoughts so far on my bookchat

The story is about a young boy and his mother trying to make a life in the gold fields. It is set in 1850s also they are in the ballarat goldfields.
The main character came from Victoria, Melbourne and the were going to the goldfields to sell the tools.
They were on a horse. The lady that they met tried to walk there.
On the goldfields the police men were mean but most people were kind. Some challenges were not finding any gold and if you didn’t get a license you would get in trouble by police.
The people weren’t treated nicely by rich people but the ones who had been at the goldfields for a while were friendly.
The main two jobs were trying to find gold and owning a store. I would rather own a store because it was very hard to find gold and it was very tight in the mines.
People had to show perseverance if they didn’t not find gold the first day they just had to keep on trying. In the book the kid had to show perseverance when his mother didn’t let him go to the goldfields at the start. The story is about a young boy and his mother trying to make a life in the gold fields. From what I have red there aren’t any references to the Eureka Stockade yet. Some peoples lives changed when they found gold and some peoples didn’t if they did’t find any gold.
The life changed in victoria because everyone wanted to go to the goldfields so most people moved there.
The gold rush impacted the indigenous people because we infiltrated there land and started digging out trees and holes in the ground

This is what I think and see from the book so far

Year 5 Market Reflection

The Year 5 market was unbelievable. My group made $441.75 with a profit or 331.75. All the money that our group made went to the James-Macready-Bryant (JBM) foundation. My group sold Orbeez which sold way faster than any of our other products. We also sold Squshies – the really great designs sold quickly and the last ones took a while to sell. We also sold bracelets,  the younger kids liked them more. We also did a Rubik’s cube challenge. It was really funny to see the preps ask if they could buy them. My group member, Gus who is pro at solving them, had to explain that you can’t buy the Rubik’s Cube, to every person that asked. My group was very proud of what we made.

Next time we should make more products so we make more money for James and his foundation.

I think one of the PLA (Positive Learner Attributes) I used was Communication. My group all worked together to decide what we wanted to do based on what the customers wanted to buy. We did a survey and the results helped us figure out the best products to sell. I used my ideas to share with the group and ensure we all agreed.

I also used the PLA, Curiosity.  I used this attribute when I was thinking about what could we change and what we could be doing better next time. I asked lots of questions to help sort out our ideas.

I used the PLA Imagination. I used this when I was thinking about the products we would make – what people like and what they want to buy.

I had to use the PLA  Knowledge – the facts and ideas we researched when we thought about what products people want.

I was excited when the final products were made and the rest of the students got to see our amazing ideas.

We had ups and downs in my team. At times it was hard but we pushed through and kept on trying.

My group at the start was mucking around not doing much and not listening to each-other. But when we got to the final days we were right on working hard listening to each-others ideas and seeing what we needed to do and what we had done. That’s how I think my group showed growth.

I’ve learned that you need to work together and not fight over small things. I’ve also learnt that team working is something that really helps you.

My highlight was definitely the market day. We had so much fun doing bargains and selling our stuff. I also had fun doing other activities especially the basketball ones.

Characteristics of a good Leader That I Demonstrated

I demonstrated several leadership qualities and the one that I think I showed most of was having a  Positive Attitude. I showed a positive attitude when we had to decide what we made and I didn’t get exactly what I wanted. That was ok because it was probably would be better not to have a basketball activity, since so many groups had them.

I had to show honesty.  When I had not done the best job during some weeks I admitted that I need to work harder.

I used a sense of humour in our adds when I had to be a grandma and also in our print add.

I showed leadership when I came early on the market day and helped out so our group would be ready to raise money for the JMB.

I was a problem-solver when our group was not getting along. I tried to help everyone and get us back to working again. I helped people follow our plan that we made and told them to get back to work if they were doing the wrong thing for a long time.

I learnt that you have to listen to everyone’s ideas because when you listen to others, it helps you to achieve what you wanted and you may learn something new.

Overall the Year 5 market has helped me to be a better leader. I now know it’s important to help others when they are struggling. I also think it’s important to be flexible when things don’t always go my way.

What is your favourite thing about markets?

Year 5 market print add

This year in year five we are doing a market. As you probably know in markets you sell stuff. My group is selling squishys, squishy pops and orbeez. Orbeez are these balls that grow in water and get bigger overtime. They have limits though. Also we are doing a Rubik cube challenge. We have made a print ad. A print ad is to persuade people to use or to buy your products. Ours is about bracelets. We are selling bracelets for $3.00. They are stretchy and very high quality. They are definitely worth the price. I am definitely going to buy some even though they are in my group.

What is your favourite item that you can get from the market?

Aps reflection

This term  for Carey Aps I got AFL. It is really fun playing with your friends from school. We have had tough and great conditions. I think our footy team is strong. In the first quarter of our last game we were losing because we had the wind. But then we turned it around and scored a lot in the second quarter and made the goal less in the third quarter. We have won all our games for footy so far. We work really hard in game and in training. I have scored a couple goals and in many positions. I mainly play on the wing. I like the wing because you can always see the ball if its not behind you. But I the main thing I do is talk to the opponents. Not because footy is boring is because if your team is really good like ours and your in the back line you don’t really get the ball.

Next term I hope I get basketball. Basketball is one of my favourite sports. It’s fast moving game that’s why I love it. One team is about to shoot but the ten seconds later your team is. If you love sports in school like I do you’ll love Aps.
